Cell-level expression across many genes
Heat maps allow us to view multiple genes / isoform measurements (expression here) without the use of summaries over groups of cells. Instead, this visualization shows the measurements of the gene / isoform in each cell. Given single-cell genomics studies often have 10s to 100s of thousands of cells (if not millions), this visualization often does not scale to the size of single-cell genomics data sets. In the cases where studies are smaller or a higher resolution representation is needed, heat maps are available.
This heat map shows gene expression of several searched genes (as rows) with cells as columns. At the top of the heat map, a color bar is given to indicate which group the cells belong to. This grouping corresponds to the currently selected labels in the study (and can be changed if there are multiple groups of labels in the study). The genes shown here are the same genes shown in the dot plot example.
